Skin needling creates controlled microchannels in the skin to trigger collagen production. The treatment itself takes about 45 minutes — but what you do in the days afterward decides how much benefit you get from each session. This is the day-by-day aftercare guide we give every NuVive Cosmetics client in Edgewater, Perth.
What to Expect Immediately After Treatment
You will leave the clinic with skin that looks similar to a moderate sunburn — pink to red, warm to touch and slightly tight. This is a normal inflammatory response and the first stage of the healing cascade. Tracy applies a calming hyaluronic acid serum and a mineral SPF before you walk out the door.
Avoid touching your face unnecessarily, applying makeup, or exercising for the rest of the day.
Day 1 to 2 — Settling Phase
Redness begins to fade. Some clients notice mild flaking or a tight, dry sensation. Use only:
- A gentle, sulfate-free cream cleanser
- A plain hyaluronic acid serum
- A ceramide-based moisturiser
- Mineral SPF 50+ if leaving the house
Avoid hot showers on the face. Pat dry with a clean towel — do not rub.
Day 3 to 5 — Peeling Phase
Most visible redness has resolved. You may notice slight peeling or shedding as the surface layer renews. Do not pick, scrub or exfoliate — let the skin shed naturally. Continue gentle skincare only. Many clients feel comfortable returning to social plans by day 3.
Day 5 to 7 — Reintroduction Phase
You can begin to reintroduce active skincare one product at a time. Start with a low to mid-strength vitamin C serum in the morning. Wait another 3 to 4 days before adding retinol or AHAs back into your routine. If your skin tolerates the vitamin C without redness or stinging, you are ready to proceed.
Week 2 to 12 — Collagen Phase
Skin looks noticeably smoother, more even and fresher within a fortnight. The longer-term benefit comes from new collagen and elastin forming beneath the surface — this process continues for 8 to 12 weeks after a single session. This is why we usually recommend a course of 3 to 6 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, rather than a single treatment.
Products to Avoid for the First 5 Days
- Retinol or any retinoid
- AHA and BHA acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic, mandelic)
- High-strength vitamin C (above 10 percent)
- Fragranced moisturisers and serums
- Physical exfoliants, scrubs and brushes
- Self-tanner and bronzer
- Heavy occlusive balms
Products to Use
- Cleanser — gentle cream-based, SLS-free
- Serum — plain hyaluronic acid or a NuVive-recommended post-treatment serum
- Moisturiser — ceramide-based, fragrance-free
- Sunscreen — mineral SPF 50+ (zinc-based is preferred for sensitive skin)
Common Questions in the Recovery Window
Can I sweat? Avoid intense exercise, saunas and steam rooms for 24 to 48 hours. Sweat can irritate freshly treated skin and increase the risk of infection.
Can I wear makeup? Most clients can resume makeup 12 to 24 hours after treatment. Use clean mineral makeup and clean brushes. Avoid heavy foundation for the first 48 hours.
What if I have an event? Plan skin needling at least 5 days before any photographed occasion. Two weeks is even better.
What if I see a small breakout? Mild congestion in the first week is common as the skin renews. It clears on its own. Do not pick.
When to Book Your Next Session
For most skin concerns, a course of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart delivers the best results. Tracy will assess your skin at every appointment and adjust depth and frequency to suit your response and your goals. Maintenance after the initial course is usually one session every 3 to 6 months.
